Todai sushi buffet - Planet Hollywood Las Vegas

Sunday, September 14th, 2008

In Miracle Mile Shops, at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino

3663 Las Vegas Blvd S.,  #580 Las Vegas, NV 89109  Tel 702-892-0021

Good points - on the Wednesday dinner time we had no lineups , fair price at $27 for Sunday-Thursday
- clean
- service was good - there was enough staff to cover the number of customers
- quality was fair to good - what’d you expect, it’s a sushi buffet not an empiral class Kyoto sushi bar .  The thing that made this place stand out of everybody else was that they had raw oysters and ikura sushi (salmon eggs) on the buffet menu.  Eat 6 of the ikura sushi and you would break even on your dinner costs.
- they had some buffet items that appeared to have some ?Hawaiin? Influence like the “rainbow sashmi” which are various ribbon-like strips of raw fish that’s marinated in a spicy sauce.  There was also a similar dish but with just chunks of salmon or tuna.   Wasn’t very good, as I suspect that cheaper/chewier parts of the fish are used for it.
- there’s no ice cream bar… but there’s some sort of waffle thing that we didn’t try.

Trump Las Vegas - unfinished review

nice and relaxing elegance
- bad for someone expecting high energy excitement
- kind of out of the way,  a distance from the main activity at the strip
- need car - parking is expensive $14
- you can try parking at the fashion mall parking lot across the street…  But be careful, security patrols and makes note of cars parked over night…  You can pretend to be an employee by parking the car on the far end of 4th floor (assuming your rental car doesn’t have any identifying stickers).  Careful,  I’ve seen a tow truck making its rounds in the afternoon….  I wouldn’t keep the car in the same location for more than 8 hours at a time
- no smoking
- 22nd floor not really 22
- doors are very heavy , difficult if person has low mass
- no restaurant
- crappy gift store
- no instructions for bathtub .  DO NOT press that white button in the bathtub
- very quiet, no drunk persons, feels safe, except for noisy train that comes by once in a while- very loud!  But ignorable…  I’m making it sound worse than it actually is

- view of the strip is not really worth the extra price…  All you can really see is the roof of the Nordstrum store and the Fashion Mall.

- strip view side of building is illuminated by very bright spotlights pointed at the building, and therefore also at your room windows, making it difficult to discern anything at night.  We were on the so-called 22nd floor, so maybe the angle of the lights is more prominent on that level.  The window drapes were nice and thick, which makes the room suitably dark if one wishes.

- bed was a little too soft, but that is a matter of personal taste.  You’ll need to take this point with a grain of salt as my bed at home is the hardest one can find in the industry

- if you don’t live directly on the strip, it’d be wise to rent a car.  The distances between the major hotels is deceiving on the maps…  There’s a lot of distance between hotels and the car saves a lot on the walking time.   All the hotels have multi-level parking that is attached to the hotel itself.  The other reason is the sheer summer desert heat at over 40 degrees celsius…  You’d be crazy trying to walk in that heat.   Also, the price of a one way taxi cab ride from the Mandalay Bay hotel to the Wynn hotel is around $20,  that’s a big chunk of a typical daily car rental rate…  A ride for 1 person on the vegas monorail is $5 as of August 2008.   One important point I’ve discovered… Most local Las Vegas employees have never used the monorail and don’t seem to know of its location.

- rooms are at a comfortable distance from elevators .  Not like other hotels on strip where the rooms are a marathon run from the nearest elevators

- One thing that really pissed me off…  while exploring around in the hotel facilities, I came apon the exercise room which was locked by a maglock card pass.   Ok, no problem, just swipe my room card and see if it will let me in - it didn’t…  ok no problem again, I wasn’t planning on exercising anyways.   So then later, after checking out of the hotel at the end of my stay, I look over the bill, and I see that I was charged for using the exercise facilities - there was no signage or any documentation saying that they bill you whenever you swipe your card in anything…   Just remember to be careful where you swipe your card, and to look over every detail on your checkout bill before signing.

Review - enterprise car rental in las vegas

Monday, September 8th, 2008

All car rentals at the Las Vegas airport are handled by a central facility which houses most of the major car rental brands, I.e. Hertz, enterprise, budget.  Access to the facility is by shuttlebus, and is around a 10-15 minute long ride.  The Enterprise rental facility was very professionally run, and knew their business well.   At the time, they had the cheapest rates.   If you’ve never been to Las Vegas, I’d recommend that you also rent the GPS unit (approx $10 per day) , or bring your own.   The car I had, a Mitsubishi Galante 2009 was running well, and was mostly clean except for the back seats which had some visible stains, most probably from spilled drinks.   Air conditioner in the Galante worked extremely well, especially for the August Las Vegas desert heat.
I didn’t have the opportunity to test out the “tiptronic”-like gear shift system…  Looked interesting though.
One important note for Canadians in Las Vegas…  The gas station quick pay credit card system won’t work for Canadians.  Their systems ask for a US zip code, which doesn’t work with Canadian credit cards.   You’ll need to pay first with the attendent and then gas up, if you don’t use up your entire amount, it will automatically be refunded to you.
